John Lewis is turning to an insider with three decades of retail experience to steer its next chapter. The British department store announced Monday that Will Kernan will succeed Peter Ruis as managing director, with the transition set to take effect in mid-September—just ahead of the crucial holiday trading season. Main Developments Kernan, who joined the John Lewis Partnership board as a non-executive director in 2023, will assume the managing director role in mid-September. His appointment comes as part of what the company describes as an orderly succession plan, with Ruis remaining until Sept. 6 to ensure a smooth handover. Ruis returned to John Lewis in 2024 after a previous nine-year tenure that included serving as buying and brand director. During his most recent stint, the retailer achieved record customer satisfaction, driven by updates to its digital platform and search capabilities, investments in stores such as the Glasgow renovation, and the addition of brands and restaurant concepts including Topshop and the Platter. "After nearly three years of significant investment and modernization, the business is now on a much stronger footing," he said in a statement. Background Kernan brings a 35-year retail career to the role, having served as chief executive officer at River Island, The White Company, and Wiggle. Earlier, he spent 13 years at New Look, where he held positions including group financial director, chief operating officer, and group managing director. Most recently, he served as chairman of furniture and kitchen retailer Neptune. His board experience with John Lewis since 2023 gives him a head start, as he noted: "Having served on the Partnership's board for three years, I have a clear understanding of the John Lewis business and a huge appreciation for the Partnership's values and employee-ownership model." John Lewis operates 36 stores alongside an omnichannel presence. The retailer also hosts hospitality and retail partnerships, including Benugo, Ori Cafe, Jamie Oliver's Cookery School and café, Waterstones bookshops, and David Clulow Opticians. In 2024, the business received a Royal Warrant as a supplier of household goods and furnishings to King Charles III. Why It Matters The leadership change lands at a pivotal moment for John Lewis, which has been modernizing its operations and customer experience under Ruis. Kernan's appointment signals continuity, given his board familiarity and deep retail operational background, but also brings a fresh perspective from his CEO roles at multiple brands. His focus on growth—"We have significant headroom for growth," he said—suggests an ambition to build on the recent investments rather than retreat. For a retailer competing in a crowded UK market, maintaining momentum in digital, stores, and brand partnerships will be critical. What's Next Kernan will officially take the reins in mid-September, just as the retailer gears up for the peak trading period. Ruis's departure on Sept. 6 leaves a brief overlap for transition, and the company has not disclosed his next projects. Observers will watch for any strategic shifts under Kernan, particularly around further digital enhancements, store investments, and partnership expansions. The new managing director's first major test will be navigating the holiday season while preserving the trust and loyalty that the John Lewis brand has cultivated.
