European fashion platform Zalando has placed a strategic bet on the future of logistics by investing in Sereact, a German startup specializing in physical AI for warehouse robotics and manufacturing. The move signals growing confidence in artificial intelligence systems that can operate across diverse hardware, from single-arm picking cells to humanoid robots, in the fast-paced world of e-commerce fulfillment. Main Developments Zalando has joined Sereact's ongoing Series B financing round, contributing to a total of $116 million raised in this specific tranche. The investment positions Zalando as a strategic investor in the Stuttgart-based company, which has now accumulated over $145 million in total funding since its founding in 2021. At the heart of the deal is Sereact's Cortex technology, a universal AI operating system designed to control multiple robot forms, including single-arm picking cells, dual-arm return stations, and humanoid robots. The system is already deployed in over 200 live installations across Europe, serving clients such as Daimler Truck, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. The company has long relied on efficient logistics to manage its vast inventory and fulfillment operations. Sereact was established in 2021 in Germany, developing its Cortex AI operating system from the ground up using real production data from live deployments. The Series B round was initially led by Headline in April, with participation from BullhoundCapital, Daphni, and FelixCapital, alongside returning investors AirStreetCapital, Creandum, and PointNine. Why It Matters Zalando's investment validates Sereact's approach to physical AI, particularly the use of production data from live deployments to train its systems. Masood Choudhry, senior vice president for logistics at Zalando, described the move as underscoring the company's commitment to supporting European technology firms and shaping modern e-commerce standards. For the broader fashion and logistics industry, the deal highlights the increasing reliance on AI-driven automation to handle complex tasks like picking, packing, and returns processing. Sereact's Cortex 2.0, the next-generation model being scaled with the new capital, promises to anticipate physical outcomes and plan movements before robots act, potentially reducing errors and improving efficiency. What's Next Sereact plans to use the additional capital to scale Cortex 2.0, which the company says will be able to predict trajectories, assess risks, and optimize efficiency in real time. The funding will also support further international expansion beyond Europe, where the company's systems are already operational. Marc Tuscher, CTO and co-founder at Sereact, emphasized that Zalando's investment confirms the company's strategy of building Cortex on real production data. Dr. Ralf Gulde, CEO and co-founder, called the partnership "a strong signal to the market" that companies focused on operational excellence believe in their technology.
